VALORANT RR and MMR explained — how ranked rating, hidden MMR, convergence, and decay actually work, and what your RR gains tell you.

In VALORANT, RR is the visible 0–100 progress bar inside each division, and MMR is the hidden skill rating the system actually uses to match you and to decide how much RR you gain. The short version: MMR is the truth, RR is the display. If the system thinks your real skill is higher than your current rank, it pays out extra RR per win to pull you up faster. This post explains how the two interact, why performance stops mattering as much at the top, and how to read your RR gains.

RR: the part you can see

Ranked Rating (RR) runs from 0 to 100 within each division. Win a game and you gain RR; lose and you lose it. Hit 100, and you promote to the next division; drop below 0, and you demote.

The amount you gain or lose per game isn't fixed. It's driven mainly by whether you won, then adjusted by your hidden MMR. Typical swings land somewhere in the teens per game, but the exact figure depends on the matchup and your MMR — and Riot retunes these numbers across patches, so don't treat any single value as gospel.

MMR: the part the system actually trusts

Your Matchmaking Rating (MMR) is a hidden number representing the system's best estimate of your true skill. It's what the matchmaker uses to build lobbies, and it's the reference point for your RR payouts.

The relationship is simple to state:

  • RR is what you see. MMR is what the system believes.
  • Your rank is trying to converge on your MMR. If your MMR is higher than your displayed rank, the system overpays RR to close the gap. If it's lower, it underpays.

Convergence: why under-ranked players gain more

Convergence is the mechanism that pulls your visible rank toward your hidden MMR. It's the single most useful concept for reading your own progress.

  • If you're under-ranked (MMR above your rank), you'll gain more RR per win and lose less per loss. You might gain 25+ and drop only single digits. The system is fast-tracking you.
  • If you're over-ranked (MMR below your rank), the reverse happens: small gains, painful losses. The system is gently pulling you back down.
  • If you're at your MMR, gains and losses roughly balance around the win/loss line.

So your RR swings are a live readout of what the system thinks. Read them like a gauge:

Why performance matters less above Ascendant

Below the top tiers, individual performance (kills, impact, how decisively you won) can nudge your RR gain up or down within a game. This rewards players who are clearly outperforming their lobby and helps push smurfs and under-ranked players up quickly.

Above Ascendant, that performance weighting fades. At the highest ranks, the system leans almost entirely on win/loss. Two reasons:

  1. The skill gap between players narrows, so raw stats are a noisier signal of who's actually better.
  2. At the top, winning is the only thing that reliably distinguishes players, so the system trusts results over the scoreboard.

Practically: in lower ranks, popping off helps your RR. In Immortal and Radiant, just win — the scoreboard barely matters.

Decay at the top

Immortal and Radiant players are subject to inactivity visibility rules. If you don't play a ranked game for 7 days, you'll be removed from the leaderboard. After 14 days, your rank badge is hidden on your profile. Your RR is never actually lost — playing one game restores everything.

Key points:

  • Decay only affects the top tiers (Immortal and Radiant). Below that, your rank sits where you left it.
  • It's driven by inactivity, not losses — you don't decay for playing and losing, only for not playing.
  • The fix is simply to play periodically. A handful of games on a regular cadence keeps decay off your back.

Exact thresholds and amounts shift per patch, so check the current ranked notes if you're sitting near the top.

What your RR gains are really telling you

Pull it all together and your RR movement becomes a diagnostic:

  • Consistently large gains mean the system is convinced you belong higher. Keep queuing while the convergence works in your favor.
  • Suddenly smaller gains as you climb mean you've converged — you've reached your MMR, and from here it's an honest grind.
  • Big losses for the same result your friend shrugs off mean your MMR sits below your rank. Focus on clean, winning games to rebuild it.

The win itself is the lever — RR just reports the system's confidence in you.
